Where is it or is it part of the alternator?

Part of the alternator, unless you mean a regulated line for the instruments.

Right, dials suddenly stopping and autobox and abs lights coming on. battery light was on but no more, think the bulb must have blown.

Definately voltage regulator, exactly the same symptoms as my last Vectra. The charge / battery lamp will have blown and you need to be careful you don't fry the loom and battery.

The Ignition/battery light bulb is actually used as the sensing circuit for the alternator to start charging.  It needs to be replaced at the same time as the alternator - and NOW, ideally!

A new/replacement alternator is definately the best option.  I have heard of duff alternator regulators boiling a battery dry...

Thanks guys, thought that might be the case, it is charging.
Can the regulator be removed with the alternator in place, seem to remember it's a bit tight but will have a propper look tomorrow. ::)

Just a thought. Have you checked the fuse that feeds the instrument panel?
