stereo wiring/power up problem [after market]
« on: 29 May 2009, 18:43:54 »

for some odd reason my stereo will only work if the ignition is fully on [ign light lit]as my original stereo was u/s & antiquated i decided to fit my aftermarket unit, the old stereo behaved in the same way, for a while i had both perm live & switched live connected together [naughty i know] but i think that was the cause of my alarm issues, so i wired it up so the ign had to be on & now ive had my battery go flat if the car is left for 2 or 3 days, its not the battery as ive tried 2 different ones with the same outcome, others i have spoken to say that the stereo should be on until you take the key out,ive metered it out but i can only find the perm live & a live with the ign light lit, is this normal for an old model mig or is there a wire wrong somewhere, could somebody tell me what colour the switched wire is & what terminal it goes to on the ign switch as its driving me nuts :' >:( :( :'(

right heres the update, according to the haynes book of lies there are 2 fuses to the stereo, one is perm live [fuse 12] & the other acc live [fuse 6],even the vx handbook says the same but it does have a *by no6 fuse listing [not on all models], anyhow i stuck my head in the fuse box & there is no fuse 6 :(, not only that but there is no connections for a fuse to be in there :o, so ive then gone to the ign switch & there is no acc live from it, so it seems like the stereo only comes on only when the ign light is illuminated & im stuck with it, looks like my luck is back to its old ways :'(,,,,,aww bugga :-[  if anyone wants to look at it i wont be offended just to confirm or otherwise :y

after market headunits need the red and yellow wires crossed over so that the red of the headunit goes to yellow on the car loom and vice versa

Original Vauxhall stereos were enabled to switch on without the ignition for a pre set amount of time (usually about an hour) and would work also on the ignition switch. Aftermarket stereos, if fitted correctly, should only switch on when the ignition is turned on. If not, then it sounds like it has been incorrectly installed, and would indeed give the problems you are experiencing.

I`m probably a little far, but always happy to take a look and advise on audio installations for anyone in and around the Paignton area.

Grill ?

No mate, you have that all wrong.

I usually take a disposable Bar-B-Q with me -

20 minutes from sea to stomach !!  can`t beat fresh mackie !!

And for those that come home, they are destined for the smoker. Not a bad session today, but still fairly early for them. Had eight good sized ones (2 over 1lb) today, not bad for killing a few hours on a very hot sunday lunchtime.

Offer will always be open !! Come and join in  :y

Ive breifly read this thread so ive probably missed somthing ...but just for the record i couldnt find a + accsesory feed ....like it says somwere the stereo will turn on with the ignition off .....so now when i take the face off bit off it goes off and when i put it on it comes on .....i find it helps you to remember to take the front panet off your stereo when leaving your car

Your live and ignition wires are joined together on your stereo to allow it to operate in the method you have described. The problem here is that even with the fascia off, the stereo is unlikely to power down fully and may still be partially switched on, inviting battery drain problems. If if works for you, then fine, but it is not a practice that is recommended.
