Can't locate MAIN BEAM relay
« on: 10 September 2009, 21:53:15 »

Hi.
Last weekend realised that my main beam isn't working. Checked fuses and they seemed to be OK same as bulbs. And there's no 'click' sound when I push the switch lever (blue light on a speedo doesn't come on as well). So my guess is it's the relay that causes the problem. But how does it look like and where is it located (engine bay relay box doesn't seem to have anything to do with headlights). Can anyone help please  :o.

P.S. Oh ... and the tractor is 2002 Omega Estate 2.2 Diesel

You sure it's the relay that is dead?Sounds more to me like the switch has gone

relay under steering wheel, at top of relays. Identical to self levelling one, but can never remember which one is which

It's in the panel next to the fuse box under the steering column. Top left relay (one of the smaller ones) as far as I can see.

Oh, and welcome to the forum. :y

I've heard that it's not easy to check that switch. Someone told me I'll end up with lots of plastic bits and pieces that are very hard to put together. Don't want to risk with my indicators before i checked everything else.

I know it's not easy.
But I had the same problem long time ago on my Fiat  Croma. Relays and fuses were ok but the swith had gone.
If it is the switch order one frome the breakers here or on ebay it probalby will be cheaper than to have it repaired.

If you have self-levelling try swapping the two relays over. See if the headlights then work.

Failing that, see if the coil contacts of the relay are receiving 12 volts when the main beams are flashed. Then try bridging the switch contacts of the relay at the socket, and see if the headlights come on.

I take it as yours is a 2.2 you don't have cruise. If you do prove it's the switch I have one here :y

Couldn't BELIEVE my eyes!!!!  :o :o
Whole week I've been checking everything: switch, relays, bulbs, fuses and even wires. Every single part was OK but still was no main beam.
Well the thing is I had only one small relay in there.... >:(
And it was on the right side. The left socket was EMPTY! I didn't pay attention to relay position before as there was only one. I've plugged relay into the left socket and now I can let people pass flashing my headlights  ::)

Don't know what to think...but last MOT passed with headlights working. So I guess it went stolen or swapped when I had some electric works done to my tractor.
But do I have that "self-levelling" or not? As I'm still missing one relay  :). Or shall I just leave it as it is....

:) Trying to imagine how it's gonna look like. And orange light on a dashboard saying "Not enough liquid in the flushing cistern". Manual saying "Refill Can only be done be done by a vauxhall dealer". 1 litre is 30 pounds plus VAT from the dealer and 99p on EBay......
