Electric Circuit test - Main Radiator cooling fan
« on: 10 December 2009, 09:44:40 »

I need to test my main Radiator fan operation is cutting in and working correctly. I realise there is a temp controlled Radiator thermo switch/sensor fitted to Radiator below top hose connection. Is there a simple circuit tester tool available from any DIY outlet to test the electric connection and see whether the Fan operates ok when supplied with current?.  Can someone explain connection procedure for using such a tool?
Sorry for the basic ignorance !  :) Don't want to kill myself using 'bare wires' connected to Battery :-)
Cheers

A cheap analogue Multi meter about £10, a cheap DVM about 20 quid, forget current, just work on the voltage, basically your trying to follow the 12v from the battery through the fuses, relays etc all the way to the fan connections, or backwards from the fan. Once you get familiar with it all and are competent with all + and - connections, a final test would be to feed 12v directly on the fan to see if it spins.

You can also check the coil of the fan motor (disconnected), using the resistance range on the meter.

Chris.

Ps, edit, 12v is harmless to you but dont short anything together.

There's instruction on how to use the pink test point of the under bonnet fuse/relay box on the Autobahnstormer's web site ......  ;) Obviously you need to be a member of the ABS to access it  :y
