What temp do your fans come on then?  Low speed fans should come on at just above midpoint on gauge (so around 96C on prefacelift, 92C on facelifts)

Hi - Just curious but why higher temperature on pre-facelifts (which I have), and if beneficial, what needs to be done to get the fans on sooner.
Thanks

Facelifts and prefacelifts actually run at the same temp (if you check with specialist equipment).  The markings on the gauge are in no way even close to accurate, particularly on the prefacelift - they are purely a guide.

The gauge is heavily biased to keep the needle around midpoint on the gauge - for example, on a prefacelift, that bit between 92C and 98C actually covers from around 85C to 110C in reality, as is subject to a 12s delayed average, so as to keep the needle stable, even if the true temp peaks and troughs...

Yep. Don't know why they put numbers on the gauge as they bear little relation to reality.

Mrs. KW's MX 5 is even worse though. Gauge is fed from an output on the engine ECU. I swear it has 3 positions. Cold, Normal and "oh, sh!t!".

A couple of minutes after starting it gradually moves from cold to normal. You can mimble around, sit in traffic or give it a total beasting and it won't move from normal, until about 30s before the rad. cap pops, whereby it moves to the "oh, sh!t!" position.

in fact as this matter made me very confused, yesterday I went to an electrician, he connected the two wires on the the upper sensor of the rad. , now the tempeture does not get more than 94, the fans are working continuously in slow rotation, that is well.
thank  you all.

If it was anything like mine it should have been labelled "Replace Head Gasket Soon" instead. ;D
