CCRT 700 doesn't want to play....
« on: 14 June 2010, 23:11:45 »

Hi, a mate had my dash including the phillips unit out to do some work. Put everything back together but couldn't find code. Got code today, followed instruction manual..... " NOTHING " ?? Each time I switch on the unit it reads 'SAFE'. Holding in the AS button and waiting for a beep...... Nothing. Holding in the CD button and waiting for the beep..... Nothing. I understand you only get so many tries at entering the code, but what constitutes a 'try' ?? 'Simply turning the unit on and off' ???  Help very much appreciated....  [smiley=cry.gif] ;)

Have you made sure that the ignition is on and the radio is off before pressing and holding the 'as' button before turning the ccrt700 back on?

SAFE without a number means that ignition has not been turned on first.

If radio is turned on BEFORE ignition, you cannot enter the code and will simply get a message of SAFE

Thanks for your replies. I think I disturbed something when I tried to get the head unit out ? Since then I have had a great deal of difficulty starting the old girl. She starts ok first thing but, switch off a few minutes later and.... No go ? Have run the battery flat twice now trying to start her. Yesterday managed to get home, but just as I was pulling up she cut out, instantly the display came up : Radio Code ----
I put the code in and she fired up ? Must admit to pushing the unit in as hard as I could. Went and bought a couple of pins today to get the head unit out, moved it out a bit then shoved it back in firmly, she has behaved...... ' so far '. The other strange thing I noticed while the engine was running, the windows would not open and close automatically when the button was pushed, had to keep pressing and releasing, but that seems fine now too ?? Why is it that, whatever happens to me all I'm told is.... ' never heard of that before mate ' ?? If there is anything electrical concerning the running of the car I could have screwed up when trying to remove the head unit, I would appreciate any pointers... Thanks again..  ;)

Sounds like you may have trapped or caught a wire somewhere - I would re-do everything again checking very carefully for anything that looks damaged or pinched along the way.

Good advice I would say Dave, of course I spoke too soon last evening. Went out to the old girl this morning, 'battery almost flat' ?
Turned ignition on, hit start and then that... ominous 'CLUNK' when you know the battery is flat.. Go into 'desperation mode', gotta get kid to school, hit start again....'CLUNK', hold onto key.... whir, whir, whir, engine turning over but, no attempt to fire ??? Let go of the key, dash readout... Radio Code ----. Input code 'yet AGAIN', but still didn't want to fire up.. I reckon the time for this old girl to bite the dust is getting close.. If only I could get the bonnet open on my Cougar, 'ah well'! Off I go to have another try...........  :-/

Just a thought, going back to the original situation when I tried unsuccesfully to remove the head unit. In the morning when I returned to the car, it was already reading out : ' SAFE '. I hadn't put the key in the ignition yet. Surely that must be a short somewhere, also that was the first morning that the battery was almost flat, and the start of the troubles. I have to say that in the 3 previous years the old girl has started instantly with just a whiff of the key... ? Also, if I get a jump start it fires instantly, is this a case of the battery being run down to a point that it doesn't give enough initial ' oooomph ' ? Any help appreciated.

I'd hazard a small guess that you have trapped a wire/loom somewhere which is giving you a short, so drainuing the battery overnight, such that the jumpstart is needed.

Such a trapped loom would also account for the intermittant nature of the problem.

Remove the radio, check all the wires/looms VERY CAREFULLY, then put it back GENTLY, whilst praying to whichever diety you fancy ...   :y :y

Just my thoughts .. nowt else .. :)

Errrrm,  [smiley=undecided.gif] could it be the battery has died inexplicably and extremely suddenly ??  Only, I've had it on charge since Wednesday evening now, and it is still charging.... Dead cell ???

I did ease out the spaghetti from behind the head unit, but can't see any obvious damage...

Mate has got a tester but have to wait until tomorrow for him to come round. If I have to get a new battery, what Amp Hour do I need, as looking on one website it states the correct battery for my car as being 65Ah, I thought it should be higher ???

Thanks for reading, any help appreciated... [smiley=wink.gif]

Thanks to all with suggestions, all correct it would seem.
Bought new battery, had to get out of local car battery dealers quickly before row got more heated, I was assured that no 70AmpH battery is available, and that the battery for an Omega 3L is listed as 67 AmpH. Got the usual speil, 'I've been in this business for 5,000,000,000 years and I'm telling you there is no 70AmpH battery for your Omega, I told them that their battery was very much lighter and smaller than mine. Got home fitted battery, instant start... Had to take the old girl for a drive as I had been reduced to driving her Rover 75 for 3 days, 'YUCK'. Put the codes into the unit again, all working, but, in the last 24 hours I've taken the unit out a zillion times, 'why' ? Because I can't get the darned thing back in.. Yeah I know it was in there before I took it out,  I CAN'T get it back in, there's just too much spaghetti and boxes? Off I go with the unit sticking out an inch.. Why don't my windows work automatically, have to keep pressing the button ? 'Huh' ! Why is there a red light flashing on the head unit, why is SAFE now back on the readout ??? Get home, take unit out by about 4 inches, red light goes out, windows work, codes get put in, unit working again. I have looked and looked at the wiring, can't see anything wrong, perhaps eyes need checking too??? Why can't I get the unit back in ? How do I find the damage or fault in the wiring ? Sorry to be such a moron, but asking for help again...  [smiley=undecided.gif] [smiley=wink.gif] [smiley=wink.gif]
