would removing the seats with the side airbags disable the whole airbag system though?  I'm still a little confused by this.

Yes, the airbag system will be looking for the airbags that are not present and will show up a warning light on the dash to indicate that the system is inoperative.

You will need to "fool" the system into thinking the airbags are still fitted, and then the rest of them will still function as normal.
Problem being Dave as you said in the power sounder thread, what would an insurance assessor make of such a modification in the event of an accident?

Thats actually a very intersting point, and one that I have previously asked of my insurance assessor friend.

His answer made me laugh

"Don`t give a shit about the driver mate, its the theft of the car I`m more concerned with"

Now, I don`t know if thats company policy or not, but unlike the power sounder which forms part of teh Thatcham Catagory 1 requirement to have on the, it would appear that the airbags are seen as nothing more than "Supplementry" restraints - I would think a different view would be taken on the actual seatbelt itself or Main restraint, but airbags do appear to be classed differently, lets face it, most cars even have a switch so that you can turn some of them off !!

Hmm wonder if they would take that line in the event of a passenger sueing the driver for compo after an accident?
I can see them getting a lot more concerned if they spy that little bolt hole to avoid a claim.

As the Captain says, I think insurance would start looking at why the safety systems didn't deploy if there was personal injury involved (and remember, emergency services have started to claim on drivers insurance in certain circumstances).

Its not a line I would go down, esp just to get the rather crappy leather seats that are fitted to early omegas.  Either buy the correct seats, or if that is financially not possible, get a set of the cloth ones that are always being given away for free on this site :y

And, yes, the entire SRS is disabled, not just the missing airbag or pretensioner.
