Can You Tow An Automatic Omega
« on: 21 February 2008, 16:34:29 »

Can you tow an automatic omega with an A-frame, do I just put in in neutral and leave the keys in the ignition for the steering lock or do I have to do anything else,
Cheers Jim

It depends how far you are towing it.

Its actualy dead easy (6 bolts) to remove the rubber coupling that connects the prop to the diff and cable tie the diff to the exhaust and then you have no issues at all!

50 miles max at 50mph max is whats recommended...risk burning out your auto box otherwise...

As stated, undo the prop shaft, 6 bolts, pretty straight forward and tie the prop shaft to the exhaust...then you can go as fast as you like for as long as you like...within legal towing limits of course...

For that length of journey I would put it on a trailer. Not sure on the legality of towing on an A frame in this country except for emergencies. It was covered once in the Legal thread, IIRC.

Bear in mind that a car on an A-frame is effectively an unbraked trailer, and an Omega is a whole tonne heavier than the maximum unbraked trailer weight you can legally tow.

In addition, even on a trailer, you will need a substantial tow vehicle in order not to exceed the maximum train weight.

If you do undo the propshaft and tie it up to the exhaust would have thought it would matter how fast you tow at, as the gearbox will be disconnected :-?
