Bee Sting aerial

Stupid question maybe, on the estate I have the bee sting aerial and was wondering if it's broke?

I can pull the rubber antenna bit off leaving a short metal stub (about 2") that has a wire coming out which is bent over the top of the metal part.

this doesn't seem to be connected to the actual antenna, should it be?
