and the auto boxes don't last 2 minutes off road!

Did wonder about that. An automatic 4x4 doesn't sound like much fun at all. Hope the auto box gives more engine braking than the Omega's.

I think it is a 4L30 as well

There were 3 or 4 different ones used through out production.....interestingly, the early BW boxes were about the best!

I drove a V8 Discovery on a course and that felt like a 4L30 with no sports mode button

Iv'e had three RRs over the years, an early 3.5 two door, an early four door 3.5 which i put a mazda SLT35 diesel engine in (awsome power) and a 4.2 LSE. All were fantastic in there own way however watch out for rotton rear xmembers and inner sills and as most window screens leak like a seive check the front floor pans where they meet the "A" panels. The LSE offers no more load carrying space with the rear seats up as any other rangey, the extra length comes between the back of the front seats and the back seats.
In all honesty the only series one range rover i would ever consider buying now would be a very late LSE with the soft dash otherwise now the P38 model has dropped so much in price you will get a far more refined vehicle for little money with one of these.

The old trick is to stick your finger in the rocker cover, if it feels smooth then all is good....if your finger comes out covered in tar.....walk away.
