Not sure if I have a problem at all really.

 My 2.6 MV6 auto, just like my previous 3.2 plod estate only likes to slip into top (4th) gear at about 43/44 MPH. Even on a dead flat road and the lightest of throttle openings it hangs on to 3rd gear like it's life depends on it. Surely it should be able to pull top from about 30 M.P.H (or possibly even less) on a light throttle.
Another thing that really pisses me off is when it insists on dropping down to 3rd every time it gets even a sniff off a downgrade....

Is it a case of "they all do that"?

I don't think mine hangs on to 3rd like yours, but the trouble is once it's in 4th it has all the acceleration of a striking slug, so the first hill you come to it starts slowing down and needs punting into 3rd, at which point it rockets off

BTW the software update needs a session on a Tech2, probably best off with one of the forum's Tech2 folks rather than a dealer though. I bet a dealer would just look at you funny..

Pretty sure mine slips into top at just under 50mph. Had software updates.

my 2.2 does that,slightest sniff of it going down hill and it selects 3rd,then it doesnt like letting go... .had other vauxhall autos that did this,but only if the accelerator pedal was left alone,when pedal was slightly touched,then the box would engage 4th,...the omega doesnt though..

What you are feeling at 40'ish MPH is probably torque converter lockup. It will be in 4th before then on a light throttle (count the gearchanges from rest).

The problem is, it's quite high geared when locked up in 4th so it needs to drop out of lockup quite regularly, and will also do so if it gets any hint of going into overrun on a downhill section.

Once in 4th at low speed, there will be quite a lot of torque load on the engine, and RPM is low so going out of lockup causes the engine to race as the torque converter is providing quite a bit of gearing-down.

It's the nature of the beast, to a certain extent. The firmware update does make it a bit more refined, though, IME.

Hmmm..... I'm not sure about that Kevin. All I know is that the revs drop from about 2200 down to about 1800 at roughly 43/44 MPH.

Its done via Tech2, it makes a significant difference to the feel of the box, the changes are much smoother, none of the hunting for gears. Well worth the update
