Engine swap 3.0 auto RHD into a 2.5 manual LHD
« on: 10 October 2011, 22:31:20 »

Exactly what issues would there be with swapping my auto 3.0 litre 97 engine into a similar age 2.5 manual RHD.

i have the opportunity of flogging my car to a Spanish garage guy as his 2.5 engine is "Kaputt". I am guessing that he will need to use the ECU off my car and the throttle cable off his car. Any bellhousing, clutch issues?

If successful I will be flogging him the whole car if I can figure out EU scrappage rules between countries ::) ::)

The engine will go in without any problems, everyting will fit.
As you said, the throttlecable from his car, and ecu, transponder and chip from your's.
Best and easy way is to take the engine wieringloom and the waterhoses in the back from the 2,5, and transplant it to the 3,0. Then you dont, have to worry about modifying the auto-loom.
Flywheel and clutch is a bolt on story.
The biggest question here is the strength of the gearbox, as the 2,5 uses the R25, while the 3,0 uses the stronger R28.
But if the car isn't going to used as a drift and burnout car, it will hold up. Several R25 behind 3.0 engines where i live, and they just manage fine. Depends on the user  :y

I can't remember which way round it it now, I've never needed to do the job  ;) but ISTR that the crank on one of the cars has a needle roller bearing fitted for the gearbox primary layshaft to locate into, but the other doesn't.

you need to fit a spigot bearing into the auto engine crank as it dont have one, so the manual gearbox wont thrash itself to death with no support on the first motionshaft!!! :y

Presumably this spigot bearing would be on the end of the crankshaft of his 2.5 when he separates it from his manual gearbox. If serviceable just swap over?

It's IN the end of the crank. I'd buy another rather than try to get the old one out in one piece.

2nded!! they are a pain to get out! its possible using grease and a suitable bar(exact fit in the bearing) fill behind bearing (through bearing)with grease as much as you can get in there, then insert bar and hit with big hammer, hydraulic action will force bearing out, in practice its a pain in the butt!!! it will work but it may take some time, think the last one i bought was around a tenner!! :y
