Whilst I readily acknowledge the huge amount of money raised by him for charity I cant but agree with terbert here. To me there was always something "not quite right" about him and Im afraid I mean that more in a slightly "creepy old man" sense than "atypical eccentric Englishman". Whatever your feelings on Louis Theroux certainly Sir Jimmy didnt come out too well in that documentary. As for the persistent rumours around his sexual preferences or his masonic links who knows. Doesnt seem to be any hard evidence to back up a lot of the former claims at all but I dont doubt that there was a "darker" side to the man in some sense :-\

I used to live a few hundred yards from Stoke Mandeville Hospital, and he was a familiar sight there. I've had the pleasure of meeting him in his apartment there.

Eccentric, unique, either love or loath, he did an awful lot for charity. RIP

Yes, I'm inclined to agree with a lot of that Jerry but - as TB says - would acknowledge his many charitable works.

Very much a 'Marmite' character I would suggest (especially amongst his contemporaries in the business).

Slightly strange oddball eccentric. Never married. Kept all his dead mother's clothes. Did many good things for charity. I liked him. An enigma.

Always a bit creepy and many rumours about having a 'darker' side, there have been but a few quite guarded tributes that i have seen for such a well known celebrity. And he lied (or forgot) about never having been to Jersey childrens home Haut de la Garenne, when the police claimed he'd been there several times and had pictures of him sitting out on the lawn with the children.

RIP a classic eccentric Englishman. Achieved much good in his life and entertained millions of people, for which I'm sure he will be remembered.  :y

Think bits of it are still on youtube Webby. He talks about his time running nightclubs and puts in a slightly NormanBates turn where he keeps all of his (deceased) mum's clothes still in her old flat. As for the latter, well everyone deals with grief differently but he makes some rather strange unguarded comments which sort of go against his more public personna should I say....
