Slight knocking and loud clicking
« on: 07 November 2011, 12:45:58 »

Hi y`all
I noticed this morning a slight knocking sound seemingly coming from the front of car , also a problem i keep meaning to get round to is a loud clicking noise whenever i have to go full lock on the steering wheel... the clicking happens when car is stationary too, could they be related ?
And , what do i need to do please?
I should say i`m no mechanic under bonnet but if it aint too difficult i`ll have a go.
Cheers

Is the noise with the engine running or off?

Dose the noise materialise when going over uneven ground or bumps/potholes

If engine related will rule out the  ormal culprit of the anti roll bar drop links. Straightforward job to do and sure their is a guide in the maintenance section.

Hi mate
Clicking noise is only there when engine is running... and the other is like a knock when i go over a slightly even surface.
It was suggested to me that the power steering pump could be the clicking problem?

Clicking noise could well be the aux belt tensioner bearings stating to grumble..possibly just needs repacking with grease :y

Best bet is to remove the aux belt and let engine run for a short time and see if it goes..that way you can start to identify if aux belt or cam belt related. :y

Knocking sounds like front drop links, again joint gets dry of grease. For the price they are its almost worth replacing them anyway to atleast eliminate them from the puzzle if you don,t know their age etc. :)

Slacken off tensioner on the aux belt and lift it clear of the pulley.

Spanner on the large retaining nut and undo and you will then have the pulley removed.Remove the metal dust cover and you will see a set of bearings which live in a grease packing. If the grease has albut gone just reload with new and refit the metal dust cover..then do the exact same on the other side as identical.

Refit and replace belt and job,s a good,n  :y

Agree - loud clicking check aux belt tensioner and regrease if necessary - you will need a 15mm socket to remove.

Your knock when you go over a slightly uneven surface is probably due to breaked front drop links - can get off ebay for around £15 a pair (replace in pairs) - 10 - 15 minutes per side to replace  :y
