Dual Core question
« on: 10 November 2011, 19:08:24 »

Hi all
I am looking to buy a laptop, probably used or refurbished because of price.
Thing is, I need a decent spec, so I can do a bit of light gaming.  I have seen a few machines with various dual core processors, 2 gig or more ram, and some with half decent graphic cards. Question is, where it says Intel Dual core 1.8, does that mean it runs at twice that !! Or is 1.8 the full speed, so if a game wants a processor of, say, 2.8, would the 1.8 double to 3.6.

In this computer, I have a AMD x2 6000, running at 3000....does this mean that each core runs at 3000 ???????

I hope this makes some sort of sense to you......gobbledegook to me ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

It means that you have 2 (almost) seperate CPUs on one die (chip), both running at 1.8Ghz

That does NOT mean it runs twice as fast as a single core 1.8Ghz chip.  Generally, its around 35% faster, although really depends on workload - single thread apps (many older games are), will run no faster.

For dual core, you ideally want Intel Core i3 (better) or Intel Core2 duo.  Anything older (Intel Core Duo, Intel Duo, Intel Dual Core) is probably too long in the tooth to be useful now TBH.

I would say, gaming on a laptop is a bit of a non starter.  Many have non optimised graphics, those with discrete graphics won't hold up for much gaming - either they will clock right down (poor frame rates) or cook themselves. Laptops have severely compromised thermal charateristics.

specially designed game softwares can use both cores more efficiently

but not sure you can find many of them.. for some years I'm far from gaming :-\

also for most games gpu power is more important..  so you must check its gpu from hardware site tests..

I totally agree with Jamie and cem, cpu power (probably the i3) is the minumum spec to go for, but any form of gaming (decent games) needs a dedicated GPU.  Years ago i had an SP2100 toshiba satelite laptop, only had 512mb in it with an XP1500+ AMD cpu, but it had a dedicated Nvidia 2 16MB graphics card built that allowed me to play NFS underground from atrt to finish on it, it performed better than a lot of desktop PC's :y

run this...........

TIA  :y

:)  you reminded me a interesting moment.. some years ago I bought some version of NFS and couldnt play.. it was night time, so get in the car , run to a compu shop and bought an expensve gpu.. ;D   (still using that!)

here is a link so you may have some ideas
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-Quadro-FX-2500M.2130.0.html

as I see it will be adequate .. anyway in case it fails to be fast you can drop 3d rendering options..

however if you are after gaming, a pc will be much better as you can overclock the gpu alone without having small space limitations.. also you must check every game from their site against your hardware..

Basically, the reason for a laptop, is that we go down to the pikey wagon every few weeks, and I miss the computer. Also, swmbo says I just sit and watch telly, stuff myself and get fatter  ;D ;D
I have spare PC's here, but no room in caravan to set one up. I thought if I had a laptop, I already have trainsim, I could amuse myself, by trying to create scenario's or routes. :y
So I just need the game to run, basically. Not even thinking of putting my Flight Sim on it or any other game come to that.
When home here, I will only use it to programme the prices on our tills at the Community Centre.

PS....off topic....Kevin, Chris, TB...they have mended the Pool Table ;D ;D and we have raised Cain, at not having the keys :y

Can't you hide a decent pc under sofa benches in pikey palace, with a small LCD on the table? Will be better option than older lappy.

Please bewar buying laptops from egay, high probability of scams

off topic slightly, ive just bought a new lappy and given my wife the old one(well 18 month old)and that had 1gb ram so after using my new one with 4gb i looked into it and went bought a 2gb ddr3 stick and a couple of mins later what a difference its really sped it up.and from what i hear soon there will be 8gb available, couple that with one of these icore(i think it goes to 7)and your lappy is gonna perform tasks as you blink.by the way if im wrong on any of this its because TB has drained my resources with his silly blade problem ;D
