I've rewired my central heating today...
« on: 12 November 2011, 19:55:27 »

I didnt intend to.....i just wanted to add a room stat (lcd wifi one)

But whoever had installed my central heating (before my ownership) must have had lots of short pieces of cable and an bottomless pit of chocolate block  :o

There were 3 cables alone just going to the controller  :o

I must admit i had noticed before it looked like a 'birds nest' on the wiring front....there wasnt a central junction box, just loads of chocolate block  :o

Well, after 20 mins, i couldnt figure what wires did what.......so i just ripped it all out  ;D

Popped to electrical shop and got a 10 way junction box, 5 way junc box, 5 metres of 3 core and 2 metres of 5 core.........

Downloaded a wiring diagram from the net (for my type of system) and an afternoon later its all working again including the wifi room stat  :y

5 core was used (with a 5way junc box ) used to extend the wiring from the 3 way valve to the 10 way junc box, also used to connect the controller to the 10 way junc box.
3 core was used to replace the short pieces of cable going to the pump/tank stat/fused spur and to add the controller for the wifi stat.

Looks a lot tidier now  :y

Drives you mad when you find this rubbish workmanship in your house, reckon I'd have done the same fella. My house was wired with a new split load board......and all the neutrals being through the breakers  :o Dug around like you did and found twin + earths in some areas, singles in others, choccy block, scotch locks, some just wrapped with tape and sockets off the lighting circuit. Like you I ripped it all out and NOW its safe. Gives you good feeling when its done right. How the break do some people get away with it :-\

I must admit, i did have a bit of a guess with the hot water tank stat   ::)

The wiring diagram i was following had the connections for that stat marked as 1, 2, 3.

On my stat they were marked as COM, 1, 2.

So i guessed that as com=1, 1=2, 2=3. And guessed if i got it wrong i just wouldnt get any hot water........but as i do, i must have guessed right  :y

So i guessed that as com=1, 1=2, 2=3

good guess  :y

but seeing as it is just a switch you could have tested with a meter before connecting  :y

I could have done, but that assumes, I understood what each wire did
I could see what some wires did, as they were marked on the diagram, others were not.
I was just following a circuit diagram provided by the manufacturer of my make/model of my controller , ie pin 4 of the controller goes to pin 6 of the 10way connector (not marked what it does)  :y

A subject close to my heart over here ....
We took over management of a house on Thursday and going over the instructions for winter maintenance when the house is unoccupied the owner asked me to set up the CH timer .
I searched the house and couldn't find any programmer/timer ,wall stats but no timer, when I mentioned this she promptly handed me a 13amp socket plug in timer ,the cheap ones with mechanical trips .....
That was what was supplied by the builder on a house built 4 years ago  >:(
The boiler feed plugged into it and then that into the socket ring.
A near neighbour of mine asked me to look at his CH system a couple of years ago saying that he couldn't see how to select or control the CH in a house he just bought.
When I looked at it the whole CH/water system was switched on and off by a spur switch with no timer , CH/HW selection or thermostat control ( even radiators ) other than the boiler 'stat.
And that was on a new house. I had to install a complete control system into it.
When I was building my house I brought a "plumber " into to lay out the lines whilst I was still living in UK . I arrived unannounced to check on progress to find the drawings I supplied for the three zone heating system that we designed into the house ( and was also  required by the then new regulations  ::)), hadn't been removed from the envelope that I handed him . He had just decided that a single zone system was sufficient and had started down that line.
He was off site 15 minutes later .

It is a sad commentary on workmanship in this country, but I have found out the hard way, that any work done by any of the building trades needs to be overseen by YOU. Otherwise, it will either not be done properly, or done properly to a design that you did not ask for. >:( >:( >:(
