i'd rather they wer epointed at the drivers and forwards./...     to see how bloody awful their driving is.....    and how much time they spend on their phones while driving.....    blooody dangerous lunatics most of them....

I think you might find that if every driver had a camera pointed at them.....there would be a lot more prosecutions of private car drivers than cab drivers......i see appalling driving everyday from private car drivers.....occasionally from a professional driver........but then you get the occasional numpty in every trade.

Cameras in cabs, imo, are a good idea. I would have installed one ages ago in mine, if it wasnt for the cost.....i looked into it a few years ago.....iirc it was going to cost £1500+ to have a professional setup....you would not believe the abuse and insults cab drivers get (usually late at night and alcohol fuelled), that would not be tolerated in any other business.
Ever been in a cab and trim is missing? Who do think does that? Its not the driver.
Theres a little saying...."If its not bolted down, it'll get nicked"

So apart from cameras would reduce the abuse, it would help prevent the vandalism that goes on in the back of cabs  :y

 How long before we're watched...and listened to...24/7?

While it's useful to have surveillance in cabs for the many of the reasons outlined by TD, you're right to finish off with those words.

24 hour surveillance of the general populace - given the technology currently available - is easy to implement and will be the natural consequence of such initiatives started for innocuous and apparently sensible reasons.

It's amusing to see how those in the sovereign parliament of this country trumpet the benefits of living in a ‘free and democratic society’ when, plainly, it is anything but – then, the rights, wellbeing and true security of those who voted them into office in the first place are the furthest thing from their collective minds when they assume the protection of that bubble which encapsulates the environs of Westminster.
