Revs on it own
« on: 04 December 2011, 11:54:16 »

Hi im a newbie ive said hello in newbie area ive got a couple of probs with my 3.2 mv6. The first is when driving the car the engine revs dont drop when changing gear and when i come to a stop the revs stay where they are and slowly go up Lets say i was at 2 or 3000 rpm and come to a stop put my foot on the clutch and thats where they stay im having to use the gears top bring them right down but even then they start to slowly go up again . The second problem is engine temp dosnt go up when it does its very siight once you put the heater on the temp hits the bottom plus heater isnt very hot this is on short or long drives or in traffic am i right in thinking this could be the stat.

Sounds like the throttle body's are sticking, see maintenance guides for cleaning.

also check for air leaks.

Temperature problem is almost certainly due to faulty thermostat.

It seems as though your car is due some TLC. Cold running may have caused the breather system to fill up with mayonnaise and hence gum up the throttle bodies.

Have a read of the maintenance guides, here are 2 to get you started

Cleaning the V6 crankcase breather system

V6 thermostat replacement

ARE is this why im getting white milky on my oil filler cap and puffing some sort of gas smoke what ever you call it out of there. Theres no sign of head gasket gone no white smoke no oil in water oil on the end of dipstick is lovely when the engine is running and you take oil filler cap of you can see very small what looks like water on the cap.

just condensation nothing to worry about   :y

as said clean your breathers out, throttle bodies and check for airleaks  :y as for your thermostat sounds deffo fubared get it changed quite a pig of a job but guides on here  :y also whilst plenum is off check for oil in plugwells if the breather system has blocked up to that extent quite possibly the cam cover gaskets have blown as well might as well do them whilst it is all stripped down

I would also read the codes probably stored for your problem using Code Reader or use the Paperclip test, (see in Maint guides section). If code 19, then Crankshaft sensor will need replacing as sysmpton is erratic revving as you describe.
Godd luck with diagnosis.
