thinking about speakers.......
« on: 17 December 2011, 18:49:21 »

can anyone point me at an exhaustive set of specs for both the existing bose, and non bose omega speakers.....     I have trade contacts at several driver manufacturers...   just idly wondering if i might be able to come up with a more modern,  less budget driven design choice that would work better....   with appropriate response ranges and impedances....

(a mate is head of tech research for the worlds foremost supplier of driver components,  and i consult for several high end speaker manufacturers......   got to be worth a punt eh? )

Don't forget that the enclosure itself also affects how the drive unit will eventually sound.

i know......    ;)    have some fairly sophisticated 3D enclosure modelling facilities   :y

(not tried anything like vehicle body panel enclosures yet , ...  more normally involved in larger , box like structures.....  should be fun.....   8) )

How are you factoring in the resonant frequency of the flexible outer door skin ?

panel resonance happens , in nearly all acoustic transducer enclosures.....   the magnitude and harmonic series distribution may be different, but the concept , and math, is essentially the similar...  ...

there are some cabinet designs out there that start from a different place...   attempting to eliminate panel and internal modal resonance almost entirely,  in a manner inherent to their geometry and construction,  most recently , SE Electronics, worked with Andy Munro to produce this http://www.seelectronics.com/se-munro-egg-150

For those of you interested in playing around with speaker design, primarily for subwoofer boxes etc, there is some really good commercial software that I can recommend:

Called  Bassbox Pro 6  and available from   http://www.ht-audio.com/

Although a good tip woud be to find one of the older versions that is probably offered as a freebie nowadays - virtually just as good for you wannabe box builders
