Decisions decicisions 2!
« on: 26 December 2011, 23:03:33 »

My son is buying the MX5. He's collecting it in the new year because i can't behave myself in it. I'll either die or get banned so it's in the garage waiting for my son & hier. The Cortina has sold, been collected & cash changed hands so i've bought a 91J Granada 2.0 Ghia. Not a much loved car i know but i drove these as cabs for years before we got Omegas (mucher nicer even in 2.0 GLS spec) but i know they are bullet proof if looked after. This one has the DOHC lump, 2 previous owners & some history/books etc.& has covered 115k. It's smooth & quiet, everything seems to work, nearly new rubber & exhaust. MOT till November next year & a few weeks tax in the window, £375, so cheap. The idea was to retax run it for a few months then sell it to a mate for £200 for banger racing which would pay for itself. I'm getting another classic soon but was looking at buying a Volvo/A4/Passat diesel later in the year as an every day car & good for the sussex runs to visit Dad & family, then i go & find this.....

I know it's not diesel but most of those are twice the money & mileage. If it's as described this should be a sensible motor for everyday use & motorway munching. The Audi 5 cylinder is a punchy tough little motor, been aroung for years & as you know i look after my cars. It would be kept standard, no duccie kits or exhausts...maybe a set of nicer wheels???

Question is if i sell i'll lose at least £175 plus another ins. charge to change cars again so £200 on a car i've barely had a week. I could run it & lose £175 after a few months use which would offset said loss...so keep it. BUT not many Passats come along with one private owner & such a low mileage for the price. Seller does take PX but doubt i'd be much. Does look pretty & could be a long term road car & i don't care about it being an early model.

    Can't decide!

Probably best to go and see it in the flesh Guy.

Agree with your sentiments, and for the sort of journeys that you'd be undertaking, I'd say that it'll fit your requirements very well. Even though it's a petrol-powered job, it should return reasonable fuel economy as a mile-muncher.

Your decision though .............  ;)

As Miss Vamps would say, the driver of a car like that would be a B.O.F. Apparently I am one when it suits... ::) ::) or a fantastic Daddy, when she wants something.... :D :D

It means Boring Old Fart......... :)

And why did you sell the Cortina...... :( :(

Looks very, very booring Guy  :(

Surely some more exciting things out there as just a run about?

Just take a look at these, everything from a facelift Omega to BMW 3 series to an Audi...

That 5 cylinder engine has never been a particularly reliable one.

I can remember many a head off job on those due to cooked valves as the cooling system is not quite upto coping with the fifth pot.

well i like it!! driven a lot more so called "boring" cars. i had a 1.9tdi v reg, never let me down, plenty room for my 6' 2 frame,
liked the blue and red dash lights at night, good on tyres, they seem to hold their money, great economy and for a diesel it could shift!!

I like most of the VAG cars but have decided to err on the side of caution, give it a swerve & run the Granada for a while. I've got it now & it's comfy & reliable. The Passat looked good with the mileage, 1 owner & i'm sure it's a good motor but i fancy a V70 estate or maybe a 5 series BM instead.

  We'll see.
