Well, not directly on the server, but something is happening that could potentially affect some people accessing from 27th for up to 72hrs.  Whilst it shouldn't cause a problem, just be aware that it it could.  Homehub users could potentially suffer, reboot the hub should be the cure if thats the case.


Tech details, one of our 2 DNS servers is changing IP. We plan to start this on the morning of the 27th, but its going to involve changing a glue record. Although changing this should be live on the TLDs on their next reload (so within 12-24hrs), our ISPs all uses caching, so could be up to 72hrs.

It doesn't affect your home hub directly, but;

One of the two computers sitting on the internet that exist to tell your computer where 'www.omegaowners.com' lives in it's numerical form is being moved (think of them like a Yellow Pages for your computer, they give your computer the phone number for the name). The trouble is, the home hub keeps a 'cache' (a local list) of where these computers live on the internet, and it can take a while to realise that the computer has moved and might need a kick to catch up with reality.

In very, very simplified terms, anyway!

Fortunately, given that the server's IP didn't change this time (it probably will next time - that will be an utter barsteward plan), caching was our friend, hence why we whacked up the TTL for omegaowners.com until the old DNS went offline (then knocked it back down, as anyone able to get the new TTL can obviously get properly to an authoritive server).

I fear a more complex outage in a few weeks, which I need to start dreaming up a plan for.  I'll get a pen and pad put beside the throne....
