Installing another sound system
« on: 02 January 2012, 12:03:57 »

In my 2001 Omega I am about to install a new sound system. I have had a few Pioneers with iPod connection and Bluetooth connectivety to my phone. Now I have got an iPhone and my old Pioneer head unit doesn't work as a handsfree with the iPhone. So I got one of those new Pioneer AppRadios that lets the Iphone work from the touchscreen of the AppRadio.

The handsfree microphone from the old unit works with the new but there is a GPS-antenna that needs to be connected. I have its cable comming down at the door and going in at the side of the dash and just over the cover over the pedals. But I can't find any way in to the center console.

The wire from the microphone seems to go over the fuse panel (it was installed by pro's) but I can't find any way to reach in there over the fuses.

Does anyone know how to get in there below the steering and over the fuses. There is a hole in the center console where some cables run, I am trying to get it thru there.

Thanks

There is a route through, as UK cars have a traffic master loom through.

Stiff wire, such as 1.5mm house wiring, is your friend here...

About the fuseboxes that sit in the under part of the dash, when you open the cover, they seem to be removable. I removed the screws and opened the latch on the bottom side and was able to pull the lower part a centimeter. I didn't dare to pull any further not knowing if this was a way to go.

It looks like they should be able to be pulled out so I could reach in there, even with a long rod (like a welding rod) I think I need to see where it goes.

Thanks

I was able to use the microphone cable as a pull cable and got the GPS cable through.

Then I noticed that Pioneer has changed the connector to the microphone so I have to install the new cable for that too.

Anyway I got a way of solving the problem.

Thanks

When I installed the aerial cable for my DAB radio I took the instruments out (not difficult, see the maintenance guides).

With the instruments out you have a big opening to give access for threading the cable through. :y

Just be careful that anything you install can't get caught in any moving parts such as steering column or the brake/clutch/accelerator pedals.

Yes that came to my mind too. I have had the cluster out a few times and as you say it is pretty easy to remove.

Thanks

Once the cluster is out, you'll see a foam block behind the steering wheel. Pull this out and it gives half decent access/light to the area above/behind the fuse box. :y

Just don't forget to put it back afterwards :-X
