Oil Filters
« on: 13 January 2012, 10:03:58 »

I've got about half a dozen oil filters for a 2.2, is it OK to use them on Mrs AA's Astra, bearing in mind the Astra takes fully synth, and should have 'long life' filters.

The 2.2 filters fit the Astra.

I change the oil on the Astra about every 3/4 thousand miles.

Can't see why not. If you're changing the oil that regularly the filter will not have too much work to do.

Make sure the central thread is the same size, although I doubt it would change given same manufacturer. Some threads will appear to screw on OK, then come off a little way up the road. :o

Ah.. Other thing that might be different is the bypass valve. Some filters have them (visible in the back of the filter if you look through the threaded hole). It's a little spring loaded valve that opens if the filter clogs.

There is a valve built into the block on the V6. Not sure about the 2.2, but this might mean the filter one is deleted. Again, probably not a problem if oil changes are short, but worth comparing the 2 filters.

Guys, also how do you ermove the oil filter ''housing''? There appears to be a hex key hole which is inside a sealed nut. which one do you undo or doesn't it matter?

sorry, just going to be doing this tomorrow and doing final checks ;)

Webby, don't use the internal allen key hole, use the outer hexagon to undo it or you could crack the "housing" :y

Seeing as the 2.2 takes the same filters as the pre 1999 V6, I think its fair to say no bypass valve.

I too would use the VOF93 filters I had lying around if I was changing oil at more sensible intervals than Vx state :y
