Heater Not working below 2000rpm!
« on: 14 January 2012, 11:07:57 »

Hi guys. My 2.2 dti heater doesnt work below 2000 rpm. You have to rev engine to get heat let the revs die and no heat. I would rarely notice as I only usually drive car at night on a clear road to night shifts. But today with ice in the morning I found out all about it. Ive had problems with a pressurising header. Suspect head gasket, got it booked in next week to put something in the engine and see does it change colour. That's what they told me! Put a new water pump and thermostat. Hbv is on order! I leave the cap loose so the pressure can leak off. Is this more signs of a head gasket or something simple? Thanks in advance.

Possibly battery voltage related?

Does the battery voltage increase noticeably above 2k rpm?

If so...

Is HBV by-passing at low voltage?

Is heater fan slowing/stopping at low voltage?

Hi there! The fan still blows a full blast but cold! Untill the engine revs up to almost 2000rpm it just clowns cold. I've been driving toying in lower gear to keep revs up. Not sure about the voltage Chris but I can get that checked out too. It's not getting faster with revs if that what you mean mate it's just the heat that's affected. The temp on dash is 80 and the you stop at the light and it blows cold. When reved up get warn instantly almost. Could I check voltage mabe?

if yours was twist knobs would say an air leak on the controler pipe and not enuf suck when engine drops to keep the flap open. dont know if its the same on electric ones.

Hi, could it just be a simple case of an air lock in the system and or low coolant ???

I doubt it's an air lock mate because it was doing it before I had the thermostat changed so they done a fluid change then but I suppose it's still possible. A bit of a weird one really, I was hoping someone on here would have had a simular problem and have had it fixed. Could have done with a heater this morn.

Try to change water pump. I had similar problem on one of my previous cars....The fault was few blades in water pump were broken and water didn't circulate with flow strong enough while in low rpm.... Just a thought, hope it helps

It's flow related so my thoughts would be on a potential water pump issue too

Might be worth flushing the system before hand as well ;)

A pump would be the obvious but I've just changed this and it's the same as before mabe even worse but hard to tell. As I say I usually do nights so clear road high revs. I hope this is all related so I fix all in the end with this one. I was sat at the lights this morn keeping it above 2000rpm.

I would start with the basics.

And for me thats a case of check the vac hoses as the vac pump is a mechanical item on the diesels and hence it sucks harder with more revs. Throw in a leak and the bypass valve control and heater direction/re-circ flaps may not function correctly at lower revs.

Do you see a sudden change in temp as the revs increase?

Vac hoses ok. No change in temp at all really warms ip to bout 85 and stays there. It was working this morning with only a small bit of revs say 1500rpm and it was -3.5 on the dash. So that would make sense with vac hoses. I'll get that looked at. Thanks guys.
