My old man has a 57 plate 2.0 Tdi Passat with 61,000 miles on the clock and full service history. He received a letter off VW notifying him of a recall for an injector problem so he took the car in for the work to be completed. He's just had a call from VW saying some of the cam followers have collapsed and because they will have to remove the head to sort the problem there will be a £1400 bill .

 I've told him to tell them to put it back together again and i'll tow it home for him. Does anyone know, apart from if the followers have started to fall apart, why would the head need removing?

Depends if any damage has occured to the head I guess.

The injector faults are very well known

This current crop of 2.0 VAG diesels are realy bad units not helped by the stupid oil change intervals.

I know the older single cam PD engine allowed the cam to be replaced in situ,not sure about the 2.0TDi twin cam

Just googling and its a common problem that VW will sort by replacing the followers and a new cam if its still under warranty so he's stuffed

He told me it used to cut out every now and again but apart from that it ran fine

Best you have a look at it yourself just in case they are on job creation

I would fight like hell with them, full VW service history would help if it has one,  for at least a major contribution from the krauts

Something stinks here - if he drove it in without a huge racket from the engine then there was no cam follower issue. VW may have done something - you should leave car there and ask for urgent meeting and get VW HQ involved - to do injectors they take off rocker cover and there is a separate shaft for followers I think - yes head would have to come off to fix.

I'm getting the info second hand off my old man and after having a read I suspect its more likely to be cam lobe wear caused by the fuel pump which is common. Once i've got it home i'll have a look see

The PD setup has a cam that drives the individual fuel pumps (with electronic spill valves to control duration and timing). There was some shite followers used on these which took them and the cams out.

Tend to agree with above. If it was driven in to the dealers then it should be capable of being driven out.
