Slight Vibration/Wobble
« on: 09 February 2012, 17:23:23 »

Ok Guys,

Getting the bug of actually repairing the omega myself, so i will be posting my questions, and hoping that you omega gurus will point me in the right direction.

When i collected the car for a song, i noticed the steering wheel wobbled, so i had two new tyres fitted, balanced and the tracking done, this has reduced the vibration and wobble loads.

However, when i brake hard i get a wobble through the steering wheel, and traveling along around 45 - 60mph i get the vibration through the car (not loads mind, but noticeable) and if you hold the auto drive stick, you can feel it there too.

so what can it be, track rods and associated equipment, or could it be a propshaft issue....

I am not that mechanicaly minded but i am willing to have a go, opps it, what have igot to loose..

So Gurus, what do you think, and how can i sort it...

regards

wobble on braking is more than likely warped front discs.
vibration at speed could be the 2 other tyres that were not balanced...

yep..as said warped discs..

rears also may need geometry..

also you can check the shaft balance by lifting up/jack the rear and turn the wheels in the gear.. (turn off the traction control- and please be careful dont try high revs/speeds)   but before you need to be sure rear balance is ok

Vibration through car is likely rear balancing, or damaged rims.  Omega props are not known to be problematic.

Vibratin under braking can be warped discs, or worn suspension components.

Hi GT  :y
I think from memory, wobbble at speed when braking,if its not warped discs, could be tie rod bushes, had this problem on an old 3ltr Capri ghia, it had wide rims and  tyres on it and kept knocking out these bushes, apparently the same tie rod was fitted to an escort, which was half the wieght on the front, and the wide rims did it no favours, not sure but certainly sounds like the same problem i had :-) I think you can check by jacking the car and trying to move the wheel towards the front and rear of the car, shouldnt be much play in either direction.
Im sure to be corrected if wrong  ;D

Mintex discs and pads for the Omega are utter shite. Avoid.

GM ones for road use are hard to beat, and what I know use on both mine. Yet to destroy a GM one, never had a pattern set last more than 3 months. OK, replaced under warranty, but you still have to buy a set whilst waiting for the manufacturer to check and replace them.

"Warped" discs are actually extremely rare, on any car, but there are several reasons why "judder" when braking can occur. Explained in far better detail here ..

http://www.powerbrake.co.za/tech_info/tech_01_judder.htm

Now this won't cure the problem, but understanding it may well prevent it re-occuring in the future ...

Indeed, but the phrase is taken to mean any runout issues on it.

Some discs are prone...  ...pretty much any non-track pattern ones...
