Done a bit more diagnostics today belling out the wiring from the maf to the ecu checking voltages, and it would seem that one of my previous posts was incorrect when i stated that i had the correct voltages whilst checking pins 2 and 3 on the multi plug from the maf.
According to autodate the voltage should read 1.1 volts across pins 2/3 at idle and upwards of 3 volts as i accelerate in line with how much air flow enters the meter, mine unfortunately reads .4 of a volt at idle and .85 as i increase acceleration.
I'm guessing this means a duff maf and the reason why the mil lamp is lit, tried cleaning it with cfc computer screen spray but still the same readings after.
Sorry for my ramblings but i like to no how things work or how they are supposed to work before i go spending hard earned cash again.

Update.
Installed a genuine seimens unit supplied via company on ebay and result, engine management light out and has not reappeared in over ten starts, car drives superbly and no hesitation in gear changes, it feels more responsive and a lot more refined.
All of the codes i was seeing before have now disappeared including the p1700 p code, all i can say is she is a totally different animal to what she was before.
Many thanks to all who have helped and pointed me in the correct direction.
