4x4 ?
« on: 14 February 2012, 15:14:48 »

I'm going to be shortly in the market for a 4x4 due to new work (pulling an exhibition trailer full of books on/off of car boot fields)

I'll have a budget of about 2-3k, and need a LWB, preferably 7 seater

MrsEgg doesn't like land/range rovers cos "they're too square", so they're out

I ran a 3.0 petrol shogun for a little while a couple of years ago and I *really* liked it.
So my first choice would be one of those - there are several about for around the 1.8-2.5k mark, with LPG
or without for about 1.2-1.8k (leaving me enough for the LPG conversion).
No point getting the diesel - mpg is about the same for less oomph, and veg oil isn't the bargain it used to be.

Alternatively, a toyota landcruiser or nissan patrol will set me back about 2.5k - then LPG on top, but I know nothing about them.

So...
any recommendations?

Well I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee, only 5 seater though, I have only had it since September, bought for the long winter, should have listened to TB ::) ::) ::) It has the Mercedes 2.7 and auto gearbox so mechanical parts should not be a problem..... :y

I find I am spending about the same in fuel a week as I was in the Omega, not actually set the computer to MPG, I just love the car, but it is like driving a ship, I don't fly around anyway but with higher centre of gravity and big balloon tyres it's handling can not be called sharp :D :D

I am told by various people that they are excellent off road........ :y :y

That's how a 4x4 should look, covered in Mud....... :y :y :y

Used to do some off roading a good few years ago in a Series 3 LWB, somewhere I have a photo of me coming over the brow of a steep hill with the front wheels Clearly spinning away as the front end jumped over the brow...... :D :D :D

And a Jeep expert on OOF and not a million miles away.... :y :y :y

I can confir that the Shogun 2.8TD is the most gutless PoS 4x4 I've ever had the mispleasure to drive. I found it not terribly good off road, but never got one stuck.

The red P38 was a 2.5td which the guy who bought it off me gave me the red shoggy AND money!
the blue p38 was a 4.6 which slipped a liner and became uneconomical to repair ( I paid £3000)
the 4.0 XJ with J33EPR was my favourite but the 2.5 vm powered R reg XJ was excellent for decents, both modified by yours truly.
the SWB blue Pajero died not long after the pic was taking. it took a bit of a drink and wrote off the engine.

the blue P38 arse end and inside, immaculate!
