Thanks all, ill try the cleaning/bulb change recommendation when I get the car back - it chewed up it aux belt last night and I ended up being towed to my local garage by Mr AA man!

I dont understand why the bulb has to be changed , i never changed mine when i cleaned the mechanism and it works fine 

You only have to change it if it's blown  (Rob - author of the guide - confirmed as much in another recent thread)
