If its the same as a 2000 2.0lt diesel then its a  large fuse on top of battery. Power cable straight to pump,there is a connection block about halfway along that has the signal wires(these then follow the power cable to the pump.
 It sounds like similar symptoms to my mates one and unfortunately that needed a replacement pump.
I seem to recall a recon pump was about £100 exchange(we ended up getting one from a scrappy for £30). There are 2 types one with fins and one without make sure you  get right one.

Had a go at the wiring last night and its all intact along with the 80amp fuse so it looks like its going to need a new pump. Depending on the cost of the pump, the car might end up being scrapped ::)

This one won't be worth much. 108,000 miles, no service history, poverty spec and it looks like a golf ball its got that many dents ;D
