Huge miss-fire...
« on: 01 April 2012, 23:34:48 »

Since the MOT on Friday, it’s all going wrong!
My 3.0 FL has developed a huge miss-fire and the idle is below 500 to the point of stalling. It sounds awful and feels rough....
I don't have any fault lights on....
Any help??? :-\

Check all plug leads still connected at dispack mate - you may have disturbed one or more  ;)

Will do, I did have to change one lead as it was different to the other 5????
When I took that one out, there was water inside the post on the DIS.... I will start there...

Just a quick up-date...
Yes, the new DIS pack and leads did cure the miss-fire but it seemed that many of us have this problem...
Not only that but also water in the plug wells...
I did find that the foam pad, fitted to the underside of the scuttle was saturated with water! This, and the seal between the large scuttle section and the cabin air intake box must be the main source of water going onto the back of the engine.
With this in mind, I removed the foam pad.
The last two weeks, as I'm sure some of you will know have been quite wet so, this afternoon I had a look at the back of the engine and the top of the DIS pack, all dry!
Not even any water stains on the DIS pack at all....

Sounds good.  How big was your pad (if you will excuse the non-intended pun) and how did you remove it?  I am having the same problem!

The pad covers most of the large scuttle section (drivers side) the one with the wiper spindles poking through.
It's healed on by some push-fit metal clips that only go on one way but it is possible to get them off without damaging anything...
I used a small screwdriver to spring the cups open just enough to move them up the pegs they sit on.
Lastly, put your pad somewhere safe to dry out, you might want it again.
Another thing that might help is to replace the foam seal that sits on the end of the scuttle.... It's a closed-cell type foam tape so not all foam will do...

Hope that helps some....

I'll give it a try.  The water in my card was coming from the passenger side where there appears to be a smaller pad.

You won't need to take it apart to see if it's wet, just stick your hand under the panel and give it a squeeze... Good luck....

Get it out! But try to do it in one piece... You never know....
If I was to test for a leak at work, the engine would be out, the bonnet would be shut and the car would be placed in a rain simulation chamber with cameras placed where we would expect a leak. Or we would spray water with yellow dye in and there you see the leak.
Unfortunately, we can't do that and it's deep and dark in there.... :/

I seem to have my own rain simulator at the moment covering the area.  Yellow water is possible as I've seen yellow snow before.

But I'll get it out anyway!  ;D
