I tend to navigate by my collection of road atlases, A-Zs, and memory - and a notepad if it's somewhere really tricky.

I've often toyed with the idea of a satnav, tucked into the very lower corner of the windscreen - but I'm far too bothered about leaving the bracket or a sucker mark in and my window being broken.
How fat are the units now, and could you theoretically attach one to a sunvisor? No good for me cos my head touches the roof anyway and it'd blind me, but just a train of thought...

Buy a bracket to attach to the dash somewhere, like a telephone handsfree cradle does. They are available for most models. Then no sucker marks on windscreen
Ideally, they need to be where it can 'see' as much of the sky as possibly, which means windscreen on cars without heat reflective screens. Which means gonks all over the screen. Which shouldn't be allowed.

Never had a problem with mine. Use it every day to get me around SE London going job to job. Also used it extensively all over Europe for holidays. Got Me to the south of Italy and back when I had forgot to pack the maps!

I've had a couple of Tomtoms over the last 6 years and they've both done what they're supposed to do :)

There is a known bug caused by the leap year on certain Sat nav models, ensure its up to date or contact TomTom directly to see if there is a fix as they sorted my Dads out although it took a visit to them to resolve :y

James do you have the Solar Reflective Windscreen in your Omega?  I had this fitted in 2 of my Omegas and I had the same problem as you, in other cars the unit worked fine and it was on here I read that this type of windscreen not only relflects the solar rays but any any GPS as well.

Just a thought....

Been running a Tomtom XL Europe for around 4 years without any problem.I bought the extra aerial connection which just fits to windscreen by suction pad and then plugs into back of unit.

Not really sure how much difference it does make but as said works fine for me.I stopped the subscription after the first year as seemed a ripoff and just accept it might not be bang up to date with its maps but gets me where I need most of the time.I would say it was money well spent.

I have an older Garmin nuvi satnav which works ok but is out of date on the maps now, lately I have been using the built in nav on my Galaxy s2 and have to say that for a freebie its pretty good, when you reach destination the screen goes to streetview with a picture of where you should be :y

If only google's street view was anywhere near accurate, that would be good. But as it stands, gimmick.

That system is utterly reliant on data, thus I don't use those...

Ok, title is obviously meant in Jest, but I am getting very, very frustrated with my TomTom.

It's a TomTom One XL Europe. I bought it around 4 years ago. In the last 2 years, it takes AGES to find a GPS signal, and is always dropping it's GPS mid journey at the most inconvenient times.

It's a BIT better outside the car, but still takes forever. Sometimes I Can drive 50 miles before it finds a GPS signal!

I've tried everything on the TomTom forums, tried a hard reset, kinda stuck now.

Shall I just buy a new one!  ::)

Bring it to the Wycombe meet, mate...I'll programme it as 'entertainment section' so we can all watch you vent your anger and destroy it ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :y

I have a 5 year old Garmin Nuvi that works really well and it was the cheapest at the time.  I've never updated it, so now and again it starts telling theres a 50mph limit on the motorway where there were roadworks 5 years ago!!  ::) That dosn't bother me though as I always have the sound off, otherwise it would'a gone out the window long ago!!!  ;D

I mount it over the fuel gauge on the dashboard, so I don't get the telltale marks on the windscreen!  ;)
