Here's my mate's engine from his Pug 307.....



The engine is mounted differently to the mig..... i.e. i would say it's mounted sideways as the exhaust manifold is at the front. so is the transmission mounted sideways as well?

so if thats the case how does the driveshaft attach to the transmission?

As i said its obviously a retarded Q but not being a technician (yet) i have to ask at this early stage in my career

Yep 

Its called front wheel drive 

Gearbox bolts onto the end of the engine 
2 driveshafts.
Stick your head under the wheel arches and you will see them

so basically if its FWD then the engine will be bolted sideways and the transmission and engine to the wheels at either end.

if its RWD then engine straight with driveshaft going to rear wheels?

cheers tunnster..... is this where a ''transfer case'' can be employed: drivshaft to the rear, transfer case transferring power to the front also?

I don't know what the current VAG lineup is like, but they used to have the engine mounted along the car, like an Omega, driving the front wheels 

I guess the gearbox must have been at the back and then down to the driveshafts?

another silly q then........... if on a FW drive the axel from the passenger front wheel goes to the transmission... then where does the drivers front axel go to?
