2.5TD no brake lights
« on: 13 May 2012, 18:38:00 »

No brake lights at all.

Maybe fuse or brake light switch.

Which fuse is it -- it isn't clear from the handbook?

I suspect brake light switch as auto box selector is also inhibited but need to check fuse anyway.

A new brake light switch seems to be the solution. Here are a few notes to help others. First get a new switch to help you understand how the red collar slides along the white plunger to release the two locating tags. Also note the position of the locating "key" on one corner of the switch. This locates with the notch in the lower right corner of the switch bracket aperture in the car.

The switch can be fitted by feel but it is fiddly.

Remove panel below fusebox (three turn buttons at front and two white locating tangs at rear).

Start engine and press brake pedal hard, jam in position with piece of wood between pedal and lower edge of fuse box door. Stop engine.

Kneel outside car and feel for switch with right hand.

Pull white plunger out as far as it will go.

Slide red collar out to release locating tags and pull switch backwards out of bracket (This is awkward because locating tags may continue to hold the switch. You may break the tags but it doesn't matter as you are replacing the switch.)

The switch will fall down and hang from its wires so you can now see it and pull the electrical connector.

It is easier to fit new switch without connecting wiring.

Make sure white plunger is fully out.
Slide out the red collar.

Offer new switch into position remembering to align key with notch (This took me a long time because the switch would not engage with bracket. I finally had to file off some of the key to make the switch engage.)

Slide the red collar in to hold tags.

Reattach wiring plug with correct orientation, you can do this by feel.

Test brake lights.

Unjam brake pedal.

Replace panel.

Put Savlon on arm and drink a beer.
