3.2 V6 cambelt and thermostat change.
« on: 14 May 2012, 09:34:53 »

I have ordered the video for the cambelt, but would like to order the parts in while awaiting delivery. Apart from the cam-belt, water pump, and tensioner bearing, for the belt change, and stat, housing & 'o' rings for stat change, what other parts/seals/sealants will I definitely need? TIA

Depending on the thickness of the thermostat housing you might need to shorten or fit longer mounting bolts. Seals are also different depending on type. I got my bits from AndyC and he supplied the parts to cover all eventualities. :y

Access to the base of the thermostat housing to clean the mounting face is easier with the cam belt tensioner backplate removed, so worthwhile doing the 2 jobs together.

Thanks Kevin, we were talking about the bolt issue yesterday while doing Nige's diff., and I decided that I would try to order new bots with the housing & stat, and from what you say, VX are able to provide these. What sealants am I likely to need, I think I need a particular type for the cam covers, (or have I made that up?) - and new cam cover seals I guess. Would doing the breathers at the same time be made any easier? :y

You don't need to touch the cam covers (unless you are replacing the seals at the same time, in which case, a set of cam cover gaskets, 16 O rings and some black RTV sealant - Loctite 598 or the GM stuff).

FWIW, my 2002 3.2 had the thicker thermostat housing, and the supplied one was thinner, meaning I could cut down the existing bolts.

The thermostat can also be swapped to the old housing but mine was a bit corroded and pitted at the flange faces and where the transfer pipe joins, so getting it to seal might have been a challenge without a lot of work cleaning it up.

While you've got the plenum and scuttle off it would be worth getting down to the breather box behind the driver's side head and making sure the little nozzle isn't blocked.
