My dad lives alone 210 miles from me and carers reported wasps nest in porch over front door. I contacted pest control company who say they can treat it but front door cannot be used for at least 24 hours after treatment as wasps will be going beserk - danger is they will sting carers and/or get into house. Problem is carers have to get in and back door is not really an option as it is accessed at side of porch.

Seems a bit odd that current products on market cannot act faster. I will have to ring a few other pest companies I suppose.

Yep, ditto. A touch of H&S gone mad, I reckon.

When we used to treat them about 20 years ago we advised 24 hours but in reality it was more like an hour to 3 at the most

If you go for self treatment option do it at night, there is a spray foam that you used to be able to get it stops them from getting out as well

I just use the powder, and puff it around the entrance holes, they carry it into the nest and it shuts it down in very short order. Never been stung doing it yet, and a lot cheaper than pest companies:y

Unfortunately diy option not possible at present. As  13 year olds my friends and I mixed calcium carbide and water to produce acetylene, stored it in balloons, attached a pipette and used as a flame thrower to clear wasps nests. This was in the 1960s and adult neighbours commissioned us to clear their nests in garden walls  - elf and safety nowhere in sight or mind - it could have been dangerous in less expereinced hands though

Although a good thing to some extent H&S has gone way too far, from being sensible to down right bloody stupid

I feel a bit gutted now - pest control have been and it was bees - and they have now destroyed nest. He said that if they can catch them swarming they take bees away with them but once inside the building it is too late.
