Need advice if poss - mum wants to buy a year 2006 Peugeot 206 Verve 1.4 Diesel car, any good? its going for £3999 - reliable? or a heap of junk? never had a french car and heard that electronics are a nightmare, poorly built interiors, but i`m not in the car trade so i aint got a clue lol - it comes with full service history, its apparently good on MPG at 55 - 60mpg? better than her current petrol 2004 Mini One 1.6 car, which drinks it!

is she mad?

If the MINI is using a lot of fuel, I'm guessing she's buzzing around in it. Suspect she'll find the Pug a bit of a dog in town.

If its French, make sure its got no features or options, as the French never did manage to make electrics reliable - expect them to start going wrong after about 3-4 years. After that time, it becomes a full time job to keep it running.

MINI dealers may be the scum of the earth, and the MINI isn't really that good a car TBH, but its a million times better than the pug

yeah i agree mate, but she is looking for someat economical with a 1.4 or 1.6 diesel engine, she does about 150 miles a week
mainly from Faringdon to Oxford twice a week, and then the odd drive to Wantage, Abingdon, Witney and Swindon

her mini isnt that good on petrol and she`s always whinging about it

anything else she could start looking at? Vauxhall Corsa Diesel? Ford Fiesta Diesel?

But does she drink her MinBin briskly. If so, any small diesel will be disappointing.

The petrol v diesel cost effectiveness has dropped a little now, probably nearer 15k per year for diesel to become cost effective.  By my calculations, she's doing less than half that....

agreed.. only drawback is Minis are heavy on fuel (we are not comparing to omega ;D ) if small engine diesels are preferred, toyota diesels will be a better option.. besides , 1.3 normal fuel yaris also can be preferred..

That looks nice enough, but seems slightly pricey, but never looked at this car to compare....dearer than a little Pug I looked at recently..... :-\ :-\

My Mum has a 207 with a 2.0L diesel, goes well, good on fuel but I think it is very uncomfortable, and as TB says, there are some electrical issues, nothing that affects it's day to day use though..... :)

You may have done this already but apologies in advance but be sure they have the vehicle there and the price is as advertised. I had an episode where they had a special offer on, they confirmed the car was there and then later denied it was ever there  ???  This was just before i was going to go down to swindon. I told them that they were just trying to lure punters in and it was a very underhand tactic (or words to that effect if you know what i mean ;)

206 diesels plagued with problems on engine and general electrics, not to mention rear axles.

If it were my mum, I'd steer her towards a Honda Jazz (petrol but still high 40's), Suzuki Swift (high 40's) or bombproof but butt ugly a Daihatsu Sirion.

I said after my last BLACK Opel Manta I would not buy another BLACK car. Stupidly we have bought a BLACK Astra. It is possibly the worst colour car you could buy for trying to keep clean. Never again  ::)

The Mini One has the same engine as the Cooper but detuned so the throttle only opens to 68%. Get an eco based remap on the Mini and save the money!

Confirmed with a college, MinBin One should return 40+ mpg quite easily, unless booted about a lot.

If she boots it about, she's going to get frustrated with small diesel shitboxes.

+ 1 Had a black v6 vectra and was a nightmare to keep clean ... had a great shine when cleaned up which i think was the initial attraction to the car when first bought :y

+2 also been there with a Black car, looked great when all polished up, but I don't have the time or energy to wash and polish a car 2 or 3 times a week, cost me a fortune in the car wash...... ::) ::) ::)

Guys!  the car has been sold she wanted

so, she has found this, but i`m a bit concerned, what do you think?
http://www.mhccars.co.uk/used-cars/vauxhall-corsa-1-3-cdti-90-sxi-3dr-ac-newton-purcell-201224475703251

the guy sent me an email and said its all good to go

he says

Wayne, the corsa is taxed, mot'd, has full service history- chain engine-has no Cambelt. Ready to go, cleaned today, had new injectors last week. Ready for the highway!

i said.  new injectors??  already? dont like the sound of this

No Wayne, its a Simple job. Diesels always have them replaced at 40-80k miles. It's not bad, in fact good, for you- I've paid.

IS HE TALKING BULLSHIT? AND SHOULD I AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE?
