Ok, assuming it is linked to running out of fuel, it's either going to be an air lock or crap in the fuel lines.  Really can't see it being anything else.  :-\

As you say it seemed to be pumping fuel ok when you remove the fuel feed pipe, that would suggest the the fuel filter isn't blocked.  So I would definately try the pressure relief valve next.

Agreed, stick at least another 10 litres in and try again...
Any chance you could have tipped diesel in by mistake?

Definitely no diesel or veggie oil. ::) :P
Will try  more petrol, but its spurting out the supply hose like a fountain which suggests to me its getting plenty up to the fuel rail.May be wrong though. :-\

Car was sat on the flat part of my drive last week when it ran out of petrol.Tipped approx 4 litres in and it started fine. I then moved it onto the sloping part of the drive and parked it there for several days, with the front facing up the drive.
Tried to start it again but it didnt want to know.Tipped another 5 litres in the tank, still nothing.
Tried again today, and as a last resort pushed the pedal to the floor and it burst into life.Ran nicely at almmost full throttle, but rough as hell on a light throttle.Cut out after perhaps a minute of running like this and wont start again no matter what I try.
I took the petrol feed pipe off and turned it over, lots of petrol spurting out.
Plugged O****  in, no codes showing.
All ideas welcome.Tia.

no codes.. either fuel or ignition problem..

I would be suspicious of pump not working properly - works and randomly cuts- may be.. try swap..

and check sparks  :-\ may be some water on/in ignition components..

Might have flooded it then :-\

Pull the two small purple relays in engine bay fuse box and turn it over several times. Pop another 10 litres or so into it, refit relays and try again :y

Failing that the pump might be on its way out, but try above before condemning it :y

Thanks chaps,I will try these ideas tomorrow. :y
Can swap a known good pump from my own car. Will be p1ssed off if it needs a pump as Ive sent two cars to the scrappy in the last year with pumps still in the tank as no-one ever wants them. ::)

Think I've got a spare pump somewhere mate.  :y

But would a partially blocked fuel filter (caused by dragging up crap from the bottom of the tank) produce similar symptoms to a failing pump?

I wonder if a new fuel filter might be worth a try...  :-\

Why don't you take the return line off the fuel rail and run it into a can with a length of hose? If fuel issues from there at a reasonable rate you know it's been right round the fuel rail and also that the fuel rail is probably pressurised, since the FPR has to open for any return flow to exist.

If you've got fuel there it's something else, I reckon. V6s tend to fire up first turn of the key even from dry in my experience.

Mine too Kevin, thats why Im stumped.Perfectly logical regarding the return line btw.I will do that. :y
Having said that,I have heard several estate owners say that they behave differently to saloons when they have run out.
