Mine too Kevin, thats why Im stumped.Perfectly logical regarding the return line btw.I will do that. :y
Having said that,I have heard several estate owners say that they behave differently to saloons when they have run out.
Mine gets quite sensitive to both pitch and roll once down to the last couple of gallons :-\ had it cut out before now without the low fuel light on and a range of 45 miles on the MID :-[

The pump lives towards the rear right hand corner of the tank so any combination of slope away from that increases the chances of cutting out quite significantly. :-\

Had a 2.0 Efi Granada that refused to fire when the pump got weak. It used to do 400 miles every weekend, and nothing during the week. Went to drive it on a friday evening and it cranked readily enough, with fuel reaching the rail. It was only when compared with an identical car that the significant difference in fuel rail pressure became apparant. :-\

Fwiw, my money is still on the fuel level, with the filter and pump following up. Rank outsider would be the crank sensor :y

Im about to remove the filter and take a look at that.I forgot to change it with the other filters,so it would be an idea to change it anyway.May also test the pump. Will get another filter in the next day or so and chuck some more petrol in at the same time. :y

The good news is that the pump works when power is supplied directly to it. The bad news is I was removing the filter, using screwdrivers on the "quick release" clips and broke the fitting off the end of the fuel pipe. Not the short pipe which goes back to the tank. The long one which runs to the front of the car. :'( :'(

Ooops ::)

1. Cut the pipe as close to the busted clip as poss.
2. Take the removed piece to the nearest marine chandlery/boat yard, and buy 6" of 7480 fuel hose of a suitable diameter and 4 stainless steel jubilee clips, again of suitable size.
3. Attach one end of the hose to the cut pipe, securing with 2 jubilee clips.
4. Attach tother end to the fuel filter, again securing with 2 jubilee clips.
5. Whilst waiting for kettle to boil/pint to settle (delete as required), turn on ignition and check for leaks.

Albs, is the car facing down the slope as per the pics in the for sale thread :-\ if it is I would pop at least another 10 litres of fuel in before trying anything else :y I've learnt this the hard way :-X

These estates will run on the road all the way down to a flashing light with no problems at all, but as soon as you stop on anything vaguely resembling a slope it will cut out before you can say " I really must put some fuel in this"

Putting a couple more cans of fuel in is easier than changing half the fuel system only to find it needs more fuel :y

Its facing up the slope Al.I tipped another 7 litres of fuel in the tank as you advised and....................................it fired up and ran as sweet as ever. :-[ ::) ;D
Thanks for the advice btw,I would never have believed a car would need so much juice to get ut running again if you hadnt been so insistent. :y

Good result mate. i suppose if yoiu had the nose up over a few days then the fuel would slowly drain all the way back to the tank?  :-\ is this where its a good idea to prime the fuel pump before firing up to circulate the fuel again?  :-\ i dont know just guessing.

re your fuel filter TA, that mod with the jubilee clips..... is this just for if you break yours like albsheimers did? or is it ok to change anyway? i loathe those really fiddly-special tool needed-PITA quick release clips and would much rather have a ''free in 5 seconds'' jubilee set up  :y
