Aqua vitae Scotia....
« on: 19 April 2008, 21:45:17 »

A man is cupping his hand to scoop water from a Highland burn.

The Gamekeeper shouts,

'Dinnae drink thon waater! It's foo ae coo's keech an' pish!, ye dinnae ken whit ye'll git frae it'

The man replies,

'My Good fellow, I'm English. Could you repeat that in the Queen's English for me, and speak slowly for Goodness sake?'

The game keeper replies,

'I said, use two hands - you get more that way!!!'

Hey! I resemble that last remark! :D

BTW, it was said on the local radio station the other night that some MSP wants a dictionary/translator made up of all the traditional scottish words and phrases.

E.G.

Dreich - Describing a wet night (weather wise)
Dour - Deppressing
Tumshie - Idiot
Dinnae - Don't
Ken - Know

There are a lot of other ones that spring to mind, bit ah cannae be bothered tae pit them doon, ye ken? ;D

Its all in the translation. As My Dad used to say "hon ensuit que mal eponse", roughly translated means "I honestly think I am going to be sick". Whether a certain family would agree is another matter.
