Never really paid much attention to data in back of manual for Omega from VX but last night wasting time between jobs and was rading through manual.

It states that oil consumption per 1000 miles is 2.12 pints ,,so in round terms just over a litre.

Now if an Omega hold 5.75 litres of oil from empty sump/oil filter if you didn,t check or top up oil within 5000 miles which is there recognised service interval for oil changes ..the car would be out of oil 

Does an Omega really use that much oil...I tend to get low oil check normally twice between my standard 3000 mile oil changes and when I inspect dipstick it has dropped by only 1 increment on metal markings so that is less than 0.2 of a litre assuming markings from top ..full  to bottom /low is 1 litre as book states.

I cant imagine my car is really much different from all the other engines so why the wild exaggeration on oil consumption by VX then ?

I think it's the extreme worst case scenario and marks the point where they'd consider fixing it under warranty.

Although not common for a modern engine, it's within what many manufacturers consider acceptable. It doesn't include leaks! It's pretty typical on twinspark Alfas, and they have tiny sumps. I've picked up several with knackered engines where the driver has sheepishly admitted to not checking the oil. Most of those conversations also included the phrase "I should have known better."

I suspect that it's due to the really thin oil used in modern engines. After all, 5w30 used in V6 engines is pretty thin, and 0w30 is hardly uncommon.

It's a get out clause IMO. Which they do use to their benefit. That being not accepting a warranty claim due to excess oil loss, as they can point to a rediculously high consumption spec. and wash hands of the whole thing.

Although it should encourage owners to check their oil regularly I suppose.

My beloved MV6, if I rev it hard, needs a top-up halfway through its 3000 mile oil service inteval. So it always gets half a litre about 2000 miles after its service .

But no blue smoke

VW PD engines do use this much oil, especially if they've been a bit neglected Not really surprising then that the camshafts wear out after about 150k

I dont remember ever having to top mine up between services. Same with my old p/fl 2.5 until it started leaking between the bottom of the block and the top of the alloy sandwich between the bottom of the block and the top of the sump.

Starting to get a little blue smoke when its been idleing for a while then you pull away.
Seems worse when the oil has been in there for a few thousand miles. Give it a oil change and it settles down for a couple of thousand miles.

Engine went bang with the clock saying 118,000
This engine was supposed to have only 90 K on it but im sure you remember who I got it off and the fun / money I spent getting the fooking thing to run right ( thank you daz for rebuilding half the ****ing engine / love you forever )

Clock says 145,000 so its anybodys guess

Half a litre between 5k oil changes. Regular as clockwork. Other car was the same.
