WHATS THE CHANCES ??
« on: 21 April 2008, 20:30:03 »

of no valve damage on mv6 1999 were the tensioner has seized but only made itself know on start up ?? car did not start just made horrible noise and cambelt has gone slack ?? is it worth putting new pulley on to check compression or whip the heads off ?? i know what i want to do just want to do the cheapest option !!  :y

its your choice and depends on what your plans are for the car. i know what i would do and that it not the easy option as such. if your going to do a job its worth doing the job right first time :y

Think I'd be doing that, least you'll know where you stand before doing any major surgery.

And the chances of that are very slim. so why go waste all that time and effort cutting corners as such :y

Sorry but go with you gut :-*

The noise part of your description is worrying Mark, but you could be lucky. Problem is, if you turn it over for compression test you may cause damage which might be avoided by biting the bullet and opening it up. I'd go with Marie's comment; do the whole job from the outset, even if it does take more time. If it's damaged, you'll know where you stand. If not, you will be assured that it will be in good nick when you get it back together.
Good luck.
Bill.

Yep. Do it. Several members have had close calls and got away with it.

Just be very careful how you align everything. Try to get some tension in the belt and get the crank round to 60o BTDC before you sort out the cam timing to make sure you don't get any contact then turn the crank up to TDC on no. 1 and fit in the normal way.

Give it a compression check and if it doesn't look disastrously bad run it up to temperature and repeat the compression check.

You could take the cam covers off, whip out the cams and see how the valves are sitting.  Woudlent give you indications either way on slight damage but would tell you if its completely fubarred.  That and a compression test is the way I would go!  :y

If I was around I would give you a hand after the DIS pack favour  :y
