best thing?
« on: 12 November 2012, 00:30:12 »

My 2.6 mv6 has just covered shy of 150k with fsh and just having oil and filter change last week the garge said your head is on the way out. So on checking the oil cap is does have the mayo effect but its really runny. Ive spoke to the garage and they have said that its best to drop a new lump in as its hard to get places to do the work, is this best?

Let's go back a bit here, a little mayo in the filler neck doesn't mean the HG is failing! :o It's very common when the car does short journeys and can be worse depending what oil is used! Any evidence of water in the oil (on the dipstick) or any other symptoms?

As for being best to drop a new lump in... Sounds like a load of rubbish to me and a sign that the garage are not sure what they are doing with these engines! :o

Is this based on a water leak they can't find by any chance...?

...On what evidence?

Yeah its in the neck, ive not checked the dipstick yet. Ive got no lost of water nor oil in the water. The idea of a new lump is because of cost of having the head done and getting places to do the work as most places wont touch the v6 round here 'more trouble than its worth' they say. On the plus side ive found a lump for 180 which is a snip of what the head would cost.

If your garage aren't capable of doing V6 Head Gaskets then they certainly aren't capable of changing the cambelt (which needs doing on a replacement engine ;)::)

Mind you, from the symptoms you have described so far they aren't capable of basic fault diagnosis either so I'd suggest looking for one of the experienced guys on here for future :y

The gaskets not the problem for them to do, its me lol. When i've the head go before on other cars i end up doing the full lot i.e skimming, pressure testing, belts etc. I just like to know its done right thats all

It is unheard of for a head gasket to go on a 2.6 v6. Your garage are either completely incompetent,or (more likely imo) trying to rip you off.
If the only symptom is mayo in the filler neck then you dont really have a problem at all. :y
You could always do what quite a few on here do.Remove the filler neck and just have the yellow cap in its place.Keep the neck in the boot and use it as a funnel when your topping up your oil. ;)

I'd steer well clear of that garage if i were you .

They sound clueless to me . . .  >:( >:(

Has this issue risen purely because of a bit of "Mayo"  around the filler neck?

No overheating or anything ?

If so I would think you have nothing to worry about .

Using GM oil  (as recommended by most on here ) helps with the mayo problem I find . :y

As said,if the only reaon for that diagnosis is the mayo in the filler neck, then they are talking utter nonsense. ;)

And what was it about changing the oil and filter, that made them say the head gasket has failed?

....you've not given 1 single symptom of failed head gasket. Yet your happy to buy a new engine based on nothing, as far as I can tell.

Once again, what symptoms are you or the garage seeing....?

As Albs says, if it's purely slight mayo in the filler neck, do a search on that subject on this site. You'll find reams of posts similar. It is NOT a symptom of HG failure.

Change the engine if you like, the symptoms will remain.

I was happy to change the engine not only because of what i was told but because i love the car and having 147k on the clock it would keep me going for many more years

Can you clarify the symptoms, as I too think there has been some misdiagnosis here.

I very much doubt the HG has failed on this. Very much doubt.
