It has just started but i'm not going to drive it as at least it' reasonably safe and is off the road where it is.

Classic symptom of a failed crank sensor ...... my Omega did the same a couple of years ago, as did her Smart earlier this year.  ;)

Breakdown driver has no diagnostic equipment or parts. Just a low loader.

He did however diagnose a c/shaft sensor and advised geniune replacement if I intend to keep the car.

Buy genuine Vx mate - believe part no. is 90540743 - last time I bought one around £50 - HTH  :y

Local dealer finally located a sensor at teatime.

Is there any of you good people out there reasonably local to me that could fit it for me please ?

I don't have jack, stands etc i'm afraid as I'm useless at any sort of DIY.
