Dim heater plug light
« on: 06 January 2013, 12:10:47 »

Hi Folks
Sometimes when I try to start my 2000 2.5TD Elite, the heater plug light and the ECU light come on at half brightness. The engine will not start. If I'm lucky, they will switch to full brightness after about 20 seconds. Then the heater plug light goes out as per normal and it starts ok.
Any thoughts please?
Also, I keep reading "pedal trick" on the forum. What is this?
Regards
Steve.

Afraid I don't know too much with 2.5TD's but pedal trick is a way of getting fault codes, details here:

Check the earth strap to the engine and all other cable conections to see if there is any corrosion or they are good

Hi Folks
I forgot to add that when the heater plug light and ECU light come on at half brightness, the radiator coolling fans also come on, even with a stone cold engine.
Any further thoughts please?

Thanks for the advice. I've just tried the paperclip test and get nothing other than the 1-2 which just keeps repeating itself.

Repeated 1-2 means the paperclip test is working but there are no codes.

Dim/spurious tell tale lamps are symptomatic of poor earth connections (or poor connections generally). Poor connections might bring up an error code for low voltage to the ECU but I wouldn't depend on it.
