need some answers please
« on: 18 January 2013, 19:16:58 »

reposting as not getting a reply in electrical section

Hi it was suggested my drivers door switch had failed, it is a double switch ie two wires to it and one ground via the screw.

On testing between the wires it has continuity until button is pressed, between a wire and the ground it has continuity until button pressed, again on the second wire to ground.

So is this correct? I though because of this it had failed and purchased another second hand one off a kind member on here, that tested the same but solved part of the problem, the dead lock now works on locking and the courtesy light goes off, but on opening the drivers door the others all lock.

Better than it was but i have to now assume the door switch is ok?

I would say you have the wires the wrong way round but I am sure others here will correct me if I am wrong ;D

If the other doors lock as you swing open the drivers door then check for damage/wear to the wiring loom inside the rubber umbilical that carries the loom into the door from the car body.

Door loom sounds plausible. They have been known to chafe and cause strange leccy problems on several occassions due to broken or shorting wires. :y

Sounds like the switch is working properly to me. Both wires are grounded when the button is out (door open). Both wires disconnected from ground and each other when button is pressed (door closed).

Hi no been checked and it is not related to the door opening as I have the door open while pressing button in as soon as released the doors lock

Hi Kevin, when i say wires i'm talking about the spade terminals ie I am testing switch completely unplugged.

Do I take it that it is correct that the two spade terminals are connected by the switch when door open?

I really think an earth issue is the cause somewhere as now everything bar the doors locking has fixed so courtesy light goes off, the dead lock now works and i dont get wierd noises from the buzzer getting fed up of it tho, when we settle the baby in the car and pull up at home as soon as i open my door the locks go down waking baby and then you have to unlock them again which again wakes baby! we are now using the van as it is just too fustrating!

If I was faced with this problem on an Omega (with no knowledge of it's history) I would lay bets on it being the door locking motor in the drivers door. If I knew that someone had recently had a go at fixing it I would buy a new one to eliminate the unknown factor.

Next prime culprit is a broken spring in the lock mechanism allowing the lock button to drop when the drivers door is opened.

A problem with the door contact may have caused random buzzer noises but it isn't linked to the central locking.

No problems with any of the door motors locks or springs, this is related to the door switch electrics and think an earth problem is causing it

As Brickhead says in the past I've found some of the wires within the concertina grommet can become fractured/bare
from constant flexing at the bendy point within the grommet
This results in peculiar faults depending which wires are affected especially if shorting/sparking happens wth the resulting insulation
meltdown
The omly way to check it out is to phisically eyeball each wire at the bend point individually
Or better still replace the loom with another (a ballache)
Have to say it has never happened to me with a miggy
But Cav's were a bit prone to it

The two spade terminals are both connected to earth when the door is opened.

Try opening the door with the switch disconnected, see if the other doors still lock even though the cdl ecu doesn't know when the door has been opened.
