I knew I should have insisted on the Four Marks curry house last night, especially as it's just over the brow of the hill. ::)

I would have said, last one there pays the bill ;D

Counter productive I think Pete. Nobody else would have made it, by all accounts. ;D

Well...all I can say is I have been driving since 1964, with a varying range of cars from an Austin A30 through to the Omega. In those days we had snow, not this puny few day stuff that some years decide to fall. It stayed on the road for weeks. We walked to school, and work if near enough. Never had a winter tyre in my life. Neither have millions and millions of others.
There are so many views about winter tyres on here...swap them, leave them on, don't leave them on, only fit at this or that temperature....I am more than confused ???
I am totally with TB on this....its no magic cure. The problem lies with the pratt behind the wheel!!!!!!!

Roll on a few days and winter tyres will be confined to Room 101 :y

It's nice there... Not stayed but stopped in as my mum lives in Richmond :y

They do quite a good job of keeping the main roads clear in towns up there but the Dale roads can be a bit dodgy

Cem.....got to agree with Chris on that.
Sorry mate....I cannot see the point in the UK. What snowfall we have had (and I live on top of the Chiltern Hills) this year is exceptional. Normally the main roads are clear within 48hrs, usually less.
Maybe other areas are different :-\
I have done without them for 48 years...I have driven on ice, driven through deep snow....part of life :y Driven to work in deep snow, driven back home on clear roads.

Question.....if, as stated by one poster, winter tyres can remain on all year....why is there a summer tyre. Surely the winter tyre would be better all round grip. ???
Especially with all the rain we seem to get over here.

Not being confrontational, Cem.....just a point of view :y

I think the question is "would winters provide better grip", rather than "are they essential". Or at least, thays the way I see it.

Certainly the only (unprovoked) problem I've had this winter, winters wouldn't have helped.

I still can't comment for certain, having not had winter tyres in the winter ::), but I'm in the same boat apart from not getting stuck ;) I did have some minor issues that the TC took care of when I had those crappy, end of life Autogrip's on the back but since fitting the Enduro's (which are M + S Rated incidentally) it has been very sure footed :y Until I start playing :-X ::)
