Don't think i mentioned the Manual gearbox in my original post.  :D :D :D ;D ;D ;D

The 2.5 manual
Hi all.

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I thought it best to open a fresh thread.

Would I be gaining enough from a 2002 2.2i GLS Auto Saloon to move to a 2000 2.5 V6 ELITE Auto Saloon ?

I must admit I like the sound the 2.5/3.0 make over the 2.6/3.2 very much.

Is the 2.5 V6 a reliable engine overall say compared to the 2.2i (obviously if maintained) ?

Is there much more oomph gain , better for overtaking, 0-60 difference etc...

Thanks in advance.

for better overtaking, 0-60 difference manuals are a better choice.. I drive the 2.5 auto for years and hated.. but after converting to manual I like the car ;D
I got manual saloon -heavy clutch made my thigh ache(motorbike prang) so easier for me+auto quicker from standstill-+ look at cost of dmf clutch kit :'( :'(

Yeah, the manual setup on the Omega is not the best, sadly. Clutch pedal feels like it has your knee up around your ear before it starts biting. ;D The throw on the gearstick is a bit long for my liking too.
i had was nice , 3.0 auto just suits the omega much better imo and not made of chocolate  ;)

Only joking, better be off to bed. Night all.  :)

....
Andy , I have used both on the same car..may be something personal but I never choose slowest option ;D

The auto/manual 'debate' is a personal thing, but many people don't give an auto a chance & judge it by a quick drive of a friend's car ...... get themselves confused when they try pressing pedals that they don't have & then vow they'll never drive another auto car again. IMHO the manual Omega is horrible to drive (based on a short drive of a 2.5TD) and is more suited to 2 pedals.  :y :y

never driven a td.. so cant comment..  but after driving many autos including friends bimmers I promised myself.. no more autos.. :-\

If I ever buy another manual car, it'll either be very special or very cheap  :y :y :y

2.5 on the German race track by the sounds of the auto box it was sounding confused at times like it thought it was a manual  ;D ;D

I had a 2.5 manual with 3.0l cams. The long travel clutch and gearbox didnt bother me and that was coming from a car with short throw box. It doesnt take long to get used to it.But I'm with Andy B. I'm no hotshot driver, don't have a need to heel/toe and don't care about being in control or the 1s in takes to reach 60mph.

OmegaMan, get a 3.2. You'll get used to the power of the 2.5 very quickly and regret not buying a bigger engine where the power will be MORE noticable and take longer to get used to

The 2.5 and 3.0 certainly appear to have some advantages with respect to fuel consumption and idle smoothness.

The manual will return better mpg to if your doing long runs every day. (note I have owned both manual and auto)

Also, the 2.5 is a little easier to work on due to the shorter plenum (not much in it), for me it was always the best of the V6's as an all rounder.

I'd say there's a significant performance difference between 2.5 and 2.2, especially if the 2.2 is auto, which really takes the edge off the 4 pot. There is another significant difference going up to a 3.0 from the 2.5. If you're going auto, then the bigger engine will always be better.

All the V6s are pretty much of a muchness in terms of reliability, etc. IMHO As said, there was a phase around 1998/9 where 3.0s tend to spring coolant leaks from the rear of the head gasket, and around 2001 there was a batch of dodgy valve stem oil seals on the 2.6. These are minor issues that have affected relatively few cars, in my opinion. Get one that has been looked after and you should have few issues up to 200K and beyond. There are differences in the ancillaries between 2.5/3.0 and 2.6/3.2 but overall, some changes for the better, some for the worse - probably not a lot in it.

As engines go, the V6s are pretty solid, by my reckoning. They get a bad reputation for access to some parts being awkward but once you know your way round one they are fine.

Nice info. :y You're too about this huh...  :D

Having owned both 2.2 auto and 2.5 auto - i prefer the 2.5. Economy wise there is absolutely nothing in it and you get better acceleration (not flyboy style but purely to join dual carriageways /  motorways / etc..)

The engine bay is more tricky to work on but you soon learn the basics.

I would go for a 2.5 over a 2.2

If i could i would in a heartbeat, But in the 4 or so years i've been looking (on and off like not 24/7  :D ) The ones i've come across have been severely abused hammered or just plain falling apart or just too expensive. And I'm just getting tired looking for one as its kinda depressing going say 360 miles then seen the car in such bad shape when the seller says mint. As said in another thread I have been considering a Volvo S60 T5 as a replacement altogether if nothing turns up soon.  :-\

I've just spotted this 2.6 Elite, 2 question.. 1. To me the rear looks a little high and 2. Why hasn't it got a boot spoiler ?

I have a 3.2 auto elite and 2.2 manual, by far I prefer the 2.2.

I don't like the V6 DBW idle, it's very rough. My 2.2 has a smoother idle, less engine noise around town, less of a drone. Cloth seats at winter are far nicer, yes leather has heaters but still not the same.

Yes 3.2 has more power, goes much better. Think it's because I've had my 2.2 for close to 8 years now, I'm quite attached to it.

I've always wanted 3.2 Elite to have Bose, HIDs and such, I've just yet to bond with it.
