You want to try our MOT. All MOT stations are run by the ministry not independents or garages allowed. There a bit like VOSA stations that MOT lorries. OK it's every two years but they can fail you on the consistency of the brake fluid and the minimum tread depth is different. It breaks your heart to scrap tyres with 3 mm left.  The ministry even have mobile artic lorry MOT stations that they can set up in any lay-by. Germany's even worse for this. A roadside check can consist of a full MOT type check

Got a few of the usual advisorys

Metal brake pipes contain corrosion
Slight play in steering rack
1 tyre down to 2mil
Unable to inspect the underside and outer sills due to plastic covers????  ??? Thats a new one on me?

Overall chuffed though, shame I'm getting rid, cost of fuel + my weekly commute to work, can't really justify £300 odd just for going to work & back a month  :'(

I have had that once on an old Carlton I had. Think they might do it to cover themselves when cars are getting on in years.
