Glad you got it fixed ...  :y :y :y

The SFC I listed above may have worked with your recovery disk depending on whereabouts in the directory structure the i386 folder is on that disc. Some recovery disks don't have it in the "standard" place which is why the article mentions copying it to the hard drive and then amending the "path" in the registry.

Unfortunately, registry corruption is quite common on XP installations once they get more than a couple of years old. It was never designed to grow as large as it does.

Vista+ are better designed in this respect, which is why they don't need to be rebuilt as often.

Registry corruption is just that - corruption. That means, most likely, lost or incorrect data. Thus the only sane resolution is to rebuild.

XP is now 12 years old. Well past its sell-by date. Luckily, MS support OS and major apps longer than most, so you get your money's worth.  But it really is time to move on :).  Likewise with Office 2003.

Note, however, that the latest Office, 2013, is NOT transferrable, and is for 1 PC only (unlike the earlier (boxed) 2010, which was transferrable and for 2 PCs). This makes 2013 a bit too limiting IMHO, so for now, I'm sticking with 2010 (although I have Home Use rights to use 2013 on 1 PC at home, through work).
